Buea School
The Buea School for the Deaf (BSD) was founded in 2003 by Aloysius and Margaret Bibum. Within a few short years, the school was given authorization as an educational institution by the Ministry of Social Affairs and grew from 13 to 102 students. In June of 2008, BSD held its first graduation exercises. Five students received certificates for their academic accomplishments. Graduating students had prepared for many months to take the First School Leaving Certificate Examination, the national examination for those exiting the first level of education. All five students learned that they passed the national examination, attesting to the quality of instruction being provided.
These accomplishments laid the groundwork for fall semester of 2008 as BSD instituted its secondary school program. BSD offers the only known academic secondary program for deaf children in Cameroon. In June, 2009, seven more students graduated from the elementary level. As each new group completes its primary education, BSD will add a new level to the secondary curriculum. The school has also instituted vocational preparation including agricultural training, sewing, and woodworking skills to further prepare students for employment.
Despite its growing student body, BSD continues to rent the original buildings used. As the school strains to accommodate its growing enrollment, BSD’s board of directors has met regularly to develop a fundraising plan to help support day-to-day costs and set a timetable for building new classrooms. A recently formed PTA is also involved to make education a reality for their deaf children. Although there are many material needs, staff and students continue to be excited by the visible signs of progress.
Accommodating a growing student body presented significant challenges while still at the original school site. By the end of 2009, BSD was able to purchase a parcel of land. The school’s board of directors began to develop a timetable for construction of new classrooms. During the summer and fall of 2010, a beginning new facility was in progress. Students continued their studies in the midst of the building process. Although there are still many materials needs, staff and students continue to be excited by the continuing signs of progress.
